Unpacking a box.
In the last few years my normal painting practice was to create one or two paintings over a short period, box up my paints for another year and get back to ‘normal’ programming. Mainly because I was working from my garage but also because I was focusing on other art disciplines - those other practices had become tedious to me by the end of 2024 and I stopped going to my studio. Early in 2025 I decided to really get serious about my painting practice. I moved that box of paints to the studio and have been hitting goals ever since.
The first one was this big painting, I’d never worked this big before. For over 2 years I had been battling with this piece and I wasn’t going to let it beat me. The photos below are a few of the many stages I worked through with it in my studio after the move.
Many times I thought I was near done but couldn’t quite resolve it. Gradually however ‘Miners Denim’ started to materialise out of the confusion of colour and shapes. I beat that weird big painting and I loved it. The move was a success!
